Gwandeokjeong Martyrs' Shrine
This is the place where the special plan of God for salvation was revealed in this area. During the Persecution year of Eulhae(1815), Jeonghae(1827), Byeongin(1866), many Catholics were caught throughout Gyeongsang province, they were brought to Daegu and beheaded in this place. Catholicism was known by these martyrs in Daegu and this shrine was opened to commemorate them. |
The Gwandeokjeong Martyrs' Memorial Site was where national martial examinations were held during the Joseon Dynasty. Nearby, there was a place where people practiced martial arts and where criminals were executed. In those days of persecution, many Catholics were considered felons. Many Catholics caught throughout Gyeongsang-do region were executed at the execution ground in Gwaqndeokjeong.
